Global Issue, Human Scale
In light of the upcoming gathering on climate change in Copenhagen, The New York Times featured a series of essays this weekend reflecting upon the human experience of the environment changing in the lifetime of a few writers around the world.
Good stuff, though of course sadly poignant. RIP, little Brazilian penguins.

Out with Landscape, in with Fashion Designer
Puma put my design, selected by them and the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, on a teeshirt. It's for sale at Puma stores and online, right now (half the proceeds go to the Trust):
If you know me, you might accurately guess that I don't love the colors they selected. But still, it's an honor. I get some free gear out of the deal, too. Below is my design- I'd envisioned orange on a red-orange shirt, but you can't have everything.
The marathon's on November 1st. If you have a TV, you may have seen Edward Norton plugging the cause on any number of shows. For more about the Marathon effort, go here. For more about our team, the Thousandmilers, go here. We're having a fundraiser benefit on Tuesday (with "special guests!")
Run, Brian, run! (also Maasai warriors, Edward, David Blaine, and Alanis Morisette! And people from AECOM Corporate Communications, and NYC hedge fund tycoons! YESSSS!!!)

observation
I have all sorts of theories about New York (surprised?).
It is often noted that there is a large quotient of attractive people in NYC. This may be due to many factors but I used to wonder if more-attractive people were more likely to be well-received in life and be given more opportunities, and thus be successful and perhaps drawn to A-type New York. This could be. It could also have to do with the distribution of types of industries here- the high presence of theater, arts, fashion, in combination with money-making industries.
Though more at play is probably less the capital costs, and more the operations and maintenance, in construction terminology. The old saying about how it's about what you make of what you've been given. There is a lot of maintenance occurring here, it seems, by the amount of teeth-whitening, wrinkle-reducing, weight-losing ads I see above people's heads in the subway, and Bloomingdale's bags I see at people's feet.

wake up, work, work, eat, work, sleep.
repeat.
The leaves have begun to turn, a signature event of the Northeast, and I find myself chained to my desk days, nights, and weekends for the next month. Bummer.
I wouldn't be involved in this stuff if I didn't think it was worth it, however. I am currently working on a design competition that will be displayed at the Bronx museum (our team won the first round to be a finalist) for the Grand Concourse. It's become insanely stressful due to condensed time schedule and difficult personalities/ office politics. On top of that I get to lead the whole thing- just lovely. (what a great professional development opportunity!!!) I have faith the efforts will turn into something wonderful. They will. They must.
Also, this marathon business has sucked up our time, as well. But on an awesome note, they are using my design to make gear, supposedly. I may be announcing my design on Puma or Northface stuff soon, no lie. Ha. World is a funny place.
It's movie release month for me though, getting out for those will be a nice break: oddly, I've not been to many if any before, and last week I got to go to the release of Coco Before Chanel, this week I'm going to see the screening of Whip It, and on the 15th I'm going to the 826 benefit release of Where The Wild Things Are with Dave Eggers, Spike Jonze and some other awesome people.

feeling sentimental toward overcast skies.

Happiness and Gender

The sexual revolution was supposed to liberate us all. But now women have so much going on, we aren't necessarily more happy though men report to be, note Maureen Dowd and Arianna Huffington.

for the Maasai Marathon effort - first it was a little blogging, then a lot of blogging, now also some graphic design. (I am excellent at overcommitment right now; I'm also supposed to be drafting up some competition sketches and studying for a major professional test I'm taking Friday.)
Following is the evolution of some possible designs for promotional/fundraising materials for the marathon- who knows, might show up on a teeshirt:
